How does learning more than one language impact the brain? This session will present an overview of dual language learning and the potential impacts on assessment, with an emphasis on oral language performance tests. In addition, this session will review assessment practices and considerations for dual language learners (DLLs) with a focus on DLLs who speak English and Spanish in the United States. Case studies will be used to demonstrate different clinical scenarios.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this webinar, the learner will be able to:
- Describe two ways in which being a dual language learner (DLL) impacts the brain,
- List three assessment practices that can be used with DLLs,
- Describe one benefit of incorporating the home language into assessments for DLLs.

Presenter Bio
Casey Lynn Taliancich-Klinger, PhD, CCC-SLP is a bilingual speech–language pathologist, researcher, professor, and project director. She holds a PhD in speech–language pathology from The University of Texas at Austin, where she also earned her Master of Arts in speech–language pathology, Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, and Bachelor of Science in communication sciences and disorders. Dr. Taliancich-Klinger serves as a project director for Western Psychological Services. Dr. Taliancich-Klinger’s research focuses on language characteristics of Spanish–English bilingual children, multicultural issues, and graduate student learning. Together with a nonprofit partner, Dr. Taliancich-Klinger codirects a community engagement pediatric clinical experience for graduate students in Texas and is passionate about fostering interprofessional collaborations within the field of speech–language pathology and other health professions.

Assessment professionals including speech–language pathologists (SLPs), neuropsychologists, school psychologists, clinical psychologists, special education teachers, board certified behavior analysts (BCBAs), licensed behavior analysts (LBAs), behavior specialists, and occupational therapists (OTs).
Webinar Completion Requirements
