Live Webinar: Collaborative Comprehensive Assessment Within a Science of Reading Framework
Description of Webinar
Although the scientific evidence base for effective reading has existed for decades, the term “the Science of Reading” has gained traction in the last few years, potentially leading to misunderstandings. This becomes especially problematic as school districts attempt to modify and enhance their MTSS policies and procedures to address literacy issues. Strong core instruction grounded in Science of Reading principles is crucial. To be most effective, a literacy system needs to bring together assessment, curriculum, intervention, and personalized learning.
The presentation will address components of reading, including language development, and the issues in developing an efficient and effective MTSS process whereby data collection, communication, and appropriate interventions occur. It will review procedures to perform an efficient collaborative assessment between service providers (primarily the speech–language pathologist and school psychologist) and how it can assist in data collection, collaborative interpretation, and intervention development. Participants will gain a strong working knowledge of and ability to differentiate between language processing, dyslexia, and developmental language disorders (DLD) using the Science of Reading framework. This presentation will give special emphasis to assessment and language development of ELL populations. Report writing templates also will be shared.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this webinar, the learner will be able to:
- Prepare a practice-ready patterns of strengths and weaknesses (PSW) model on how to organize and interpret data from all school-based service providers;
- Describe the distinctive definitions of dyslexia and developmental language disorder (DLD) within the context of the Science of Reading; and
- Explain how monolingual professionals can effectively evaluate an English-language learner (ELL) to determine dyslexia.
