The Early Sociocognitive Battery (ESB) is a preschool clinical tool that assesses a range of pivotal skills in interpersonal engagement and understanding, known as sociocognitive skills. These skills are associated with language development and are impaired in children with social communication difficulties and autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
The ESB builds on clinician observations and identifies children who are at risk of short-and long-term social communication difficulties and ASD, as well as risk of language disabilities, and guides early intervention to support these children.
The ESB is:
Systematic. It evaluates a representative range of sociocognitive responses elicited through carefully selected and well-specified activities.
Standardized. It enables objective comparison of a child’s responses with those typical for their age.
Culturally neutral. It is appropriate for use with children from diverse cultural and language backgrounds.
Informative. It reveals children’s skills and needs, indicating likely outcomes, and providing a guide to further clinical assessment and intervention.
Primarily a nonverbal assessment tool suitable for use with children 1 year, 6 months through 5 years of age from diverse language backgrounds, the ESB is a battery of three subtests measuring the following areas:
Social responsiveness
Joint attention
Symbolic comprehension
Identifying sociocognitive delays in these key areas can help professionals target their early childhood intervention strategies at the right time and in an appropriate way.
The ESB is a portable assessment in an easy-to-carry case containing more than 60 toys and objects designed to engage young children.
The ESB Kit includes all Kit Items (print material, toys, carrying case); 25 Record Forms; Manual.
